Houston Texans Transcripts (8/31): Head Coach Bill O'Brien
Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(opening statement) “We’re still in the process of making some roster moves, so nothing is official yet. I’m sure there will be an official announcement on all these moves at some point. The one thing that is official is that we did make a trade with the Denver Broncos to acquire offensive tackle Chris Clark. He’s here in the building and we’ll get going with him right away. One of the things I’ll tell you about this day, and I was just thinking about this as I was walking down here, these days—these cut down days—are very difficult days because as I’ve said over and over again to you guys, these guys have worked extremely hard. They’ve worked, obviously, on the practice field but also in places where you don’t really see them: in the weight room, in the meeting room, here on the weekends. I’m here quite a bit on the weekends and a lot of these guys are here on the weekends. It’s just a tough day. Obviously it’s tougher on them than it is on us, but the fact of the matter is we’ve got to get down to 75 today and eventually down to 53. That’s the nature of the business. I reapply appreciate all the efforts of the guys, once the official announcements are made, all of the efforts of these guys and what they’ve done here in our organization.”

(opening statement) “Good morning. As I said yesterday, whatever you want to call it, the situation with Ryan (Mallett) not being at practice yesterday, that’s between Ryan and I. There are a lot things that I will explain to you and I realize that you have a job to do, I really do. I said that in the very first meeting with you this year. I have a lot of respect for you and your profession and what you’re trying to do with information and all those things. I get it. But some things are left within the team, and this is one of them. I’m not going to take any more questions on yesterday as it regards to Ryan Mallett. With Duane Brown, I know you guys were out there today. Duane Brown has a hand injury. He’s going to miss some time here, but it’s basically day-to-day. I wouldn’t put it in the serious category but he will not play against New Orleans, so with that, I’ll take questions.”

Defensive Coordinator Romeo Crennel
(on what he thinks about QB Brian Hoyer after watching him in practice) “I think that he does a good job of managing the team. I think he’s smart. He understands the system and I think he’ll do a good job.”
Offensive Coordinator George Godsey
(on what he’s seen from QB Brian Hoyer this offseason and in training camp) “He’s been consistent, showing up first every day, taking the coaching, going out there and communicating between, not only just coach-to-player and player-to-coach, but also player-to-player and getting on the same page with each position. I mean, as a new player at any position, there’s a lot on your table right away. Not only just learning the scheme, but also familiarizing yourself with your teammates and he’s done that. He’s been first class with the way he’s approached it too.”

Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(on DE J.J. Watt’s vocal leadership) “Having been around J.J. now for a year and a half, he’s really worked hard on his leadership skills. He is certainly one of the leaders of our team, both from obviously his ability as a player but also the way he carries himself in the locker room and the message he has every day. Houston Texans Transcripts (8/25): Head Coach Bill O'Brien, QB Ryan Mallett, and more
Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(opening statement) “First thing I’d just like to say is I just read and heard that Chris Myers announced his retirement today. I just want to say a few words about Chris Myers. Personally, I just really appreciate what Chris Myers meant to us in our first year here as a coaching staff. He brought great leadership. He was definitely one of the captains of our team, brought a great intelligence to the position, a great work ethic. Everything you want when you come in as a new head football coach in a veteran football player. Really did a good job in the locker room. He was also the player rep, so we communicated quite a bit. I consider Chris, not only a really good player for us, but also a friend. I just want to acknowledge that I think it’s so difficult to play center in this league for five years, let alone 10 years. To play at such a high level for two good organizations in Denver and here in Houston, I just want to congratulate him on a great career. I would say that it looks like the Houston media has acquired a great teammate. I’m sure he’ll do a good job on that side of it, too.”

DeAndre Hopkins studied Patriots offense to learn system
Houston Texans Transcripts (8/24): QB Brian Hoyer, T Duane Brown, WR DeAndre Hopkins, and more
QB Brian Hoyer
(on being named the Texans starting quarterback) “Obviously, excited. It’s been a lot of hard work that goes into this. I think both Ryan (Mallett) and I both competed very hard. Obviously, a sense of excitement, a sense of accomplishment, I guess you would say, and realizing that it’s just the beginning. Me being named the starter today doesn’t meant that anything’s going to be given to me. I have to go out and earn it every day. It’s an honor and privilege to be able to do that. From here on out, I’ve got to go out and prove to my teammates, prove to everyone in this organization that I can be a winning starting quarterback for this team.”
WR DeAndre Hopkins
(on what he likes about QB Brian Hoyer) “He brings leadership to the table. He’s been in this position before as a starting QB. He knows what it’s like to have this pressure on him, if you say so. I think he brings a lot of aspects to this team and to this offense.”

Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(opening statement) “We have put a lot of thought into this quarterback position from OTAs to the point now where we are, about two preseason games, all those practices, everything into training camp. We spoke to the quarterbacks this morning around 7:40. Spoke to the team at 8:00. We told the group, the quarterbacks first and then the team that we’re going to name Brian Hoyer the starting quarterback for our team right now. I talked to you guys yesterday about the fact that this is the third game of the preseason where we want to try to get into more of a regular season routine here and treat it as such, as a regular season game. I felt like it was very important to give Brian the chance to run our offense all week, you know, knowing that he was the starter going into this game. This game will be treated the same way schematically. We’re not going to go into this game and basically show everything that we’ve been working on for the last six months, but we’ll give him the chance to start the game and play with the offense for a while in this game.”

If you went through every position with me and I’m just being straight up with you, if you went through every position with me, there are certain positions that basically, hey, I know who it’s going to be to start the game on September 13. Obviously 99 (J.J. Watt) is going to start the game at the defensive end spot on September 13, as an example. Most of the decisions because of the roster that we have and what we’re trying to build here, we’re trying to build a competitive team, we’re trying to build a team filled with a bunch of good guys that love to practice and then go out there and play hard and compete every week. Most of the decisions, again, are decisions that I’m going to make in the best interest of the team and also decisions that are going to be made on a timetable that I’m comfortable with, whatever position it is...

Teammates happy to see Clowney at practice
14 observations from Monday's #TexansCamp
Houston Texans Transcripts (8/17): Bill O'Brien, Jadeveon Clowney, Brian Cushing, and more
Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(on having OLB Jadeveon Clowney back at practice) “You know, it’s good to have everybody out here. Anytime you get guys back from injury, it’s always good to have as close to a full 90-man roster as you can. It’s good to have everybody out here.”
OLB Jadeveon Clowney
(on how he felt at practice) “I felt pretty good. I’m just happy to be back out here with my teammates. Taking it one day at a time.”
(on what it means to him to get back out on the field after being injured) “It means a lot to me, you know, to be out here, practicing with the guys. It’s been a long time, so I was very excited to be out there today.”

Houston Texans Transcripts (8/16): Head Coach Bill O'Brien
Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(on how he would evaluate each of the three quarterbacks) “I thought all three of those guys operated the offense efficiently. I think as units—offensive, defensively and special teams-wise—we still have a lot of improving to do. When I looked at that position, I thought that those guys went out there and played consistently, reacted to different things that came up during the game that they hadn’t seen in training camp and reacted pretty well. They played with some poise. Did they make some mistakes? Yeah, each one of them made some mistakes. Those are things that are definitely correctable. Those guys are hardworking guys and they’ll be back in here tomorrow and they’ll start correcting those mistakes.”

HEAD COACH BILL O’BRIEN
(on the play of the quarterbacks) "I’m not going to into an evaluation of each one. I have to watch the tape, but I thought those guys went out there and operated the offense pretty well. They were consistent. The calls were made properly. We had a few things here and there, but as far as operation of the offense for the first game out, I thought they did a decent job."
WR CECIL SHORTS III
(on his 58-yard touchdown reception) "(Brian) Hoyer did a good job reading the coverage. It is a play where we have to be on the same page and understand where the coverage is. The offensive line did a good job of giving him time and he found me in the hole."

(on the first episode of Hard Knocks) “I thought it was a very entertaining program. I thought it introduced a lot of our players and coaches to the public, and gave them an opportunity to know them the way we do. I think they’re some interesting personalities, and I think it’s going to be a popular show.”
RB Alfred Blue
(on what he wants to show people in the first preseason game) “Run the ball downhill, man. Get positive yards, don’t lose any yards, hold onto that football, definitely don’t fumble the ball. Just be productive in the backfield as a unit.”

The DeepSlant: "Hard Knocks" episode one
Houston Texans Transcripts (8/12): DeAndre Hopkins, J.J. Watt, Vince Wilfork, and more
Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(on today’s practice) “Today was a tough practice. I thought we did a good job today in practice. Our guys really competed. They finished practice both sides of the ball, a lot of good situations came up, a lot of situations that can illustrate what complementary football is all about. So I thought it was a really good day and, look, it’s not easy out here. It’s training camp. We run a tough program and these guys really did a good job today."
DE J.J. Watt
(on the defense) “I mean, yeah, the defense has to be a nasty unit. You have to go out there and you have to have that bit of edge to you, you have to have that mentality that nobody is going to run the ball on you, nobody is going to pass the ball on you, so we go out here every day and that’s what we’re working on. Now, we’re not going to be successful every single time, obviously, but that’s what training camp is for. Every single day we’re working towards that.”

(on if he’s ready to discuss who will start at quarterback on Saturday) “No, it’s preseason. Still in training camp you know, and still got a lot of things to install between now and Saturday, seriously, I mean we have two-minute situations, backed up, goal line situations still, two-point plays. I mean we have so many things that we’re not, regardless of who starts the game, both guys will play, all three guys will play in the game. Do not read too much into who’s starting that game. I’ll tell you that.”

(on being in Richmond, VA) “It’s nice to be back in the state of Virginia and it’s good work. Obviously, the reason we’re here is for our football team to get better and compete, so I think there have been a couple good days and I’m looking forward to another one tomorrow.”
DE J.J. Watt
(on practicing with the Washington Redskins) “It’s always fun being out here and practicing against another team, seeing other guys. In this league it’s your goal to work extremely hard and try to earn the respect of your peers and the coaching staffs around the league, the guys that are also out there also working their butts off. It’s a lot of fun. The competition has been great. I really enjoyed it so far. The people of Richmond have been unbelievable, it’s pretty awesome. Having a great time so far.”

(opening statement) “First of all, Arian (Foster) yesterday in practice suffered a groin injury. He’s still being evaluated. Look, he’s going to miss some time, there’s no doubt about that. We have no idea how much time he’s going to miss. There’s medical opinions that still need to take place. One thing I want to say about Arian is, you know, I feel bad for him personally. I think he came into this offseason and he really worked extremely hard, came back here and ran the conditioning test really, really well, came back in great shape, and he was practicing well. But, as a football team, it’s next man up, next man up. We’ve got a good backfield, a good bunch of guys back there, and I thought they came out here today and competed well. But that’s the news on Arian as I know it now. So I’m not taking any questions on Arian Foster. Second thing, on anyone’s, any individual player’s personal situation as it relates to family, or anything else, I won’t comment on that. In the building, we’re very supportive of all of our players, we want our players to have success. We want them to go into each and every day knowing they have our support. I believe our players know that. So I won’t comment on anybody’s personal situation. With that, anybody have any questions?”
