TEXANS MAKE COACHING CHANGES
HOUSTON – The Houston Texans have hired Larry Izzo as special teams coordinator, Sean Ryan as wide receivers coach and Anthony Weaver as defensive line coach.
Izzo joins the Texans staff after spending five seasons (2011-15) as the New York Giants assistant special teams coach, where he was a part of the team’s Super Bowl XLVI victory. In 2015, the Giants ranked fifth in opponent kickoff return average (20.3) and tied for first in field goal percentage (93.8). New York was also seventh in the NFL in punt return average (10.2) and 10th in kickoff return average (24.9). The 41-year-old Izzo, who is from Fort Belvoir, Va., attended McCullough High School in Houston and was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at Rice University.

Football 101: Watt's defensive dominance
TEXANS DE J.J. WATT NAMED PFWA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
HOUSTON – Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt was named Defensive Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America today. Watt, who also won the award in 2012 and 2014, joins Bruce Smith (1990, 1993 and 1996) and Reggie White (1987, 1991 and 1998) as the only players to earn the distinction three times. Watt is also the first player in NFL history to win the award in back-to-back seasons.
The accolade is the latest in a growing list of honors for Watt, who was named to the Pro Bowl, Associated Press All-Pro First Team and PFWA All-NFL team for the fourth consecutive year following another dominant season.

TEXANS LS JON WEEKS ADDED TO PRO BOWL
HOUSTON – Houston Texans LS Jon Weeks has been added to the 2016 NFL Pro Bowl, the league announced today. Weeks will be making his first appearance in the NFL’s all-star game, which kicks off on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Weeks served as the long snapper on extra points, field goals, and punts in every game for the Texans this season. The six-year veteran also had a career-high eight special teams tackles and one fumble recovery in the regular season. Weeks passed former Texan Bryan Pittman (95) for the eighth-most career regular season games played in franchise history.

HEAD COACH BILL O'BRIEN
Opening statement:
“Just like I said after the game yesterday, I haven’t had a whole lot of time to reflect on the year, but I’ll definitely say that I’m proud of this team. Proud of these guys, they overcame some adversity during the season and proud to be associated with them. Certainly, not the way that any of us wanted the season to end. It’s not good. It’s a feeling that will linger for a long time. I know for me personally, it’s going to drive me to try to be a better coach, try to help this organization get to where we all want it to get to. Games like yesterday, you know, they really only have meaning if you build on them and use them for future success...
DE J.J. WATT
Feel any better this morning?
“No, not in the slightest.”
How are you doing physically?

If the Texans defense were a Broadway play…
Houston Texans Transcripts (1/7): Bill O'Brien, Brian Cushing, J.J. Watt, Vince Wilfork and more
Opening statement:
“Not much to update you on today. I'd say Jadeveon Clowney is day-to-day. He moved around a little bit today, and Nate Washington, same thing. Had a good practice today, and open it up for questions.”
Talk about OLB Whitney Mercilus winning AFC Defensive Player of the Month. What’s his impact been?
“Yeah, he's done a good job. It's a combination of his own work ethic and his attitude and his work ethic in the weight room, on the practice field. I think he's coached very well by (Linebackers Coach) Mike (Vrabel). So he's done a good job for us. He's one of our most improved players in the two years we’ve been here. He deserves a lot of credit for that.”
DE J.J. WATT
How do you control playoff emotions do you want to control playoff emotions?
“For the most part you treat it just like a normal game. There is some added emotion, added energy, added excitement and you need to harbor that and use it the right way and channel it to use it for positive and don't let it overwhelm you. Having been here and played in four playoff games now since I've been here, I think I've got a handle on how to do that. But I think for the most part you don't treat it a whole lot differently than the other game besides using the crowd's energy.”

HEAD COACH BILL O'BRIEN
Opening statement:
“Just on the injuries, Jadeveon Clowney was moving around decent today, but I'd still put him in the day to day category. Nate Washington moved around a little bit today, and I'd put him in the day to day category. On the roster, we obviously, unfortunately, had to place Duane Brown on injured reserve. He had surgery today that went successfully, and then we signed tackle Andrew McDonald to the active roster, so with that, I'll open it up to questions.”
WR DeANDRE HOPKINS
How have you been able to be so consistent all year considering the fact you've had four different quarterbacks throwing to you?
“Getting extra reps, I would say, and just being reliable. They're in the NFL for a reason, so that's not an excuse for any wide receiver to say I'm not successful or I'm doing something wrong because your quarterback situation.”

Texans DE J.J. Watt Named AFC Defensive Player of the Week
HOUSTON – The NFL named Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt the AFC Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Watt led the team with eight tackles (five solo), to go along with a single-game season-high 3.0 sacks, three tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in the Texans’ 30-6 victory.
It was Watt’s 21st career multi-sack game, the second-most of any player in the NFL over his first five seasons in league history, and his fifth career game with 3.0-or-more sacks. Watt’s 3.0 sacks on Sunday gave him an NFL-best 17.5 for the year, which marks his third career 15.0-sack season, the second-most in the NFL since 1982. Reggie White is the only other player to notch three 15.0-sack seasons in his first five years in the league.

Houston Texans Transcripts (1/5): Conference Calls with the Kansas City Chiefs
CHIEFS HEAD COACH ANDY REID CONFERENCE CALL
What are your thoughts on this matchup?
“I think both teams have probably changed a little bit since that first week. We respect the heck out of them. They are a good football team. They shut us out in the second half, we are aware of that and we have to prepare like crazy to play against the Texans, well-coached and good players.”
CHIEFS QB ALEX SMITH CONFERENCE CALL
What are your thoughts on how both teams turned around their season after slow starts?
“I think you realize that this isn’t that uncommon. These are long seasons, teams that start hot, fizzle out and it is the team that can get in and is peaking at the right time that is playing their best football at this time of year. Once you are in, it doesn’t matter what your record was. All those wins back in September and October don’t mean anything at this point. It is really about what kind of football you are playing at this moment and winning games now, so I think that has kind of been the nature of the NFL playoffs the last 10 years. I think it’s been that, it’s about teams that can get hot and go on a run.”

HEAD COACH BILL O’BRIEN
Opening statement:
“Okay, like I said yesterday, just proud of this team, faced some adversity and dedicated themselves to having a good season and finished the regular season the way that we wanted to. So proud of that and quickly turn the page here. We’re on to a big challenge here. Kansas City is a very good football team, won 10 in a row, great coaching staff, great players, so it’s a big, big challenge for our football team, and we’ve already met today. We started working on these guys, and it’s going to take a lot of effort from a lot of different people to try to come out on the winning end. On the injury front, Duane Brown obviously suffered a bad quad injury. He’ll undergo surgery on Wednesday. Just a little bit about Duane, from the day I arrived here, Duane has been one of the leaders of this football team, one of the best left tackles in football, always out there at practice, always in early, staying late, meeting extra, working in the weight room, doing everything that you would want a leader to do. We’re going to miss him, next guy is going to have to step up, but I just want to tell you my feelings on Duane. Then Jadeveon Clowney, I’d say he’s day-to-day still. I think he feels pretty good today. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow and then Wednesday obviously. Nate Washington is in the same category, day-to-day. Then I would say that Cecil Shorts has a chance to play in the game on Saturday. With that, I’ll open it up to questions.”

What’s the difference in terms of communicating with the players between college and the pros?
“Yeah, it’s different. It’s definitely different. Just the whole environment is different. In pro football, you have these guys from 7 a.m. until 4, 5 o’clock in the afternoon. It’s all football all day. In college, not only are you dealing with different age groups, but you’re dealing with guys that are going to class trying to get a degree and have study hall, guys that are away from home in certain instances for the first time, freshmen. In pro football, you’re dealing with an age range of let’s say 20, 21 years old all the way up to 35, 36 years old, in some cases 40 years old. It’s a very different environment, both are challenging, both are tough, there’s not one that’s harder than the other, having done both. They’re both very, very challenging.”
